Recent Graduates of Universities in Wales are Now Working in 58 Countries

Friday, January 10, 2020

HESA has released data which shows that 320 of the 14,725 2015/16 graduates from universities and other higher education providers in Wales are working in 58 of the world’s 195 countries. With the top 10 destinations being France, China, USA, Spain, Australia, Italy, Ireland, Switzerland, Netherlands and Hong Kong.

Not only are graduates leaving Wales for other countries, but there is a general lack of graduate opportunities in Wales and a 'brain drain' removing graduates from the country. A 2017 report by think-tank the Resolution Foundation found, of Welsh graduates who went to university in Wales and stayed for work, 40.6% were in non-graduate jobs. It said Wales attracted 23,807 graduates between 2013 and 2016, but 44,335 left - a difference of 20,528.

These statistics are part of the reason we set up GradWales.com - to help students and graduates to easily see what opportunities there are in Wales, and to help Welsh employers target those that want to work in the country.
